Who’s dreaming of going abroad this year? Do you already have a passport? If not, let’s find out how to apply for one, including the requirements and fees. Don’t worry, it’s not hard!
A passport is an official document issued by the government that serves as an identity and travel permit for Indonesian citizens who wish to travel abroad. It contains personal information such as your name, place and date of birth, and photo. A passport is essential for immigration processes and for entry into your destination country.
Good news—nowadays, you don’t even need to go to the immigration office to get a passport. The process has become much easier and more efficient thanks to online services. Here’s how it works!
The Directorate General of Immigration provides the M-Paspor app to help people submit passport applications online. You can download the M-Paspor app from the Play Store or App Store. Then, follow these steps:
Fill in your personal details completely and activate your account according to the instructions provided.
After activation, log in using the registered email and password.
Decide whether you want to create a new passport or renew an old one. M-Paspor offers services for both.
Fill out the application form and upload the required documents as requested. Make sure your document photos are taken perpendicularly and clearly, or upload scanned documents in JPG format. If you're taking photos of documents, use a scanning app that can automatically adjust the document's elements.
Enable the “use current location” option to select the nearest immigration office. Choose a date that works for you from the available schedule.
Complete the payment online or offline within 2 hours of registration. If not paid within 2 hours, the application will be automatically canceled.
Go to the immigration office on the scheduled date with your M-Paspor registration proof and original documents for verification, interview, and biometric data collection.
Besides the M-Paspor app, you can also manually apply by going directly to the nearest immigration office. Here are the steps:
Go to the immigration office in your city or area. It’s best to come early to avoid long queues.
Fill in your personal information using the form or electronic application available at the service counter. Make sure all the data matches your supporting documents.
Submit documents like your ID card, family card, birth certificate, and any other relevant documents to the officer.
The immigration officer will check the completeness of your documents. If everything is complete, you’ll receive a receipt and a payment code. If not, you’ll be asked to complete the documents before continuing the process.
Make the payment according to the stated fee, either online or through a partner bank.
Once the payment is verified, you'll be directed to take your official passport photo and record your biometric fingerprints.
Next, you’ll go through a brief interview with the immigration officer to confirm the accuracy of your information.
After the interview, your documents and data will go through a verification and adjudication process to confirm all information is valid.
If everything is complete and approved, you'll be informed when your passport is ready for pickup—usually within 7 business days after the interview.
Here are the documents you need:
National ID (KTP)
Valid electronic ID card or a certificate of relocation abroad.
Family Card (KK)
A valid copy of your family card.

Preparing your documents is a crucial part of applying for a passport. However, issues often arise due to unclear or blurry document photos or scans that don’t meet the standards. To avoid these problems, you can use Magic Scan from VIDA.
Magic Scan is a document scanning feature using your phone camera, specially designed to produce high-quality, secure, and ready-to-use files for administrative purposes—including passport applications.
Magic Scan saves scanned documents in PDF format, making them easy to access and upload. Plus, it allows you to scan up to 15 documents at once.
Download and open the VIDA app on your phone.
On the Dashboard, tap the green camera button.
Point your camera at the physical document you want to sign.
Choose whether you want to sign the documents individually or in bulk (up to 15).
Align your phone so the document is clearly captured using Auto Detect Document. The system will scan and automatically tidy the scan using Auto Crop & Adjust.
