The Human Cost Behind Indonesia’s Digital Fraud

Behind every digital fraud statistic are victims who lose their savings, identities, and sense of security. Through “Faces of Fraud,” VIDA highlights real-life stories and the importance of layered digital security systems.

A single case of digital fraud means a life changed forever. According to data from Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK), losses from digital fraud have reached Rp9 trillion, with more than 411,000 reports recorded between November 2024 and the end of 2025. These numbers reflect the massive scale of digital threats in Indonesia. But behind the statistics are people who lost their sense of security, trust in digital systems, and even important parts of their lives.

VIDA compiled several real-life stories from victims of digital fraud through the “Faces of Fraud” initiative, a movement created not to exploit victims’ trauma, but to remind people that digital fraud is not just a number in a report. It is a traumatic experience that steals dreams and changes lives.

1. Free Banking Administration Offer Ends in Rp60 Million Loss

A woman who runs a social foundation received an offer on social media promising free banking administration fees. She was directed to a messaging app and asked to provide personal information for verification. Shortly after, her mobile banking account was locked. By the time access was restored, Rp60 million had disappeared. What was stolen was not only money, but also her ability to continue operating the social foundation that had helped many people.

2. Data Update Request Leads to Rp50 Million Loss

A legal professional received a message from someone claiming to represent a digital wallet service, asking for a data update to avoid increased administration fees. Without suspicion, she shared her OTP code for verification. Within hours, her account was taken over and she was instructed to make several transfers to keep the account active. The total loss reached Rp50 million. In this case, the fraudsters did not need sophisticated technology, only social engineering, manipulation of trust, and a single OTP code.

3. Rp350 Million in Retirement Savings Converted into Crypto Assets

A retiree discovered that Rp350 million in retirement savings had suddenly been transferred to overseas accounts and converted into crypto assets. Funds accumulated over decades disappeared in a short time. The fraud was carried out through account takeover using a compromised device controlled by the perpetrators.

4. Fake Donation Scam Ends in Theft, Rp1.5 Million Gone

A mother caring for her child with Cerebral Palsy received a WhatsApp message from someone claiming to want to donate money. Trusting the message, she followed the instructions and entered a code without realizing her bank account was being taken over. The Rp1.5 million she had saved for her child’s treatment disappeared. One week later, her daughter passed away.

5. Identity Misuse, Victim’s Data Used for Illegal Online Loans

A young woman lent a photo of her ID card to a friend who claimed it was needed to create a WhatsApp sticker as a joke. Without her knowledge, the identity was used to apply for an illegal online loan worth Rp15 million. As a result, debt collection notices and psychological pressure were directed at her for loans she never made.

These cases show that digital fraud no longer relies on a single simple method. VIDA’s whitepaper, SEA Digital Identity Fraud Outlook, reveals that modern fraud has become increasingly organized, combining psychological manipulation, identity misuse, account takeover, and device compromise into one coordinated attack flow. What makes fraudsters even harder to stop is that they attack human trust itself.

Fraudsters exploit urgency, empathy, good intentions, and emotional exhaustion to lower victims’ guard within seconds. In many cases, victims were not careless, they were manipulated in situations designed to feel convincing and relevant to their everyday lives.

That is why digital protection today can no longer rely solely on passwords, OTPs, or reminders to stay vigilant. Founder and Group CEO of VIDA, Niki Luhur, said that warning consumers about fraud is no longer enough.

“The bigger narrative is no longer just about reminding people to be more careful, but about changing systems and raising security standards across the digital ecosystem itself. If the same vulnerabilities continue to be exploited repeatedly by fraudsters, then the question is no longer whether consumers are vigilant enough, but whether that method is still secure or not,” said Niki Luhur.

Traditional protection methods are also no longer considered sufficient against modern attack patterns. As fraud becomes more organized and exploits multiple gaps throughout the transaction process, companies now require layered security capable of ensuring that the person performing a transaction is truly the legitimate identity owner, even when data or credentials have already been compromised.

“Faces of Fraud” is one of the reasons why VIDA continues to innovate in building stronger identity security systems. Through ID FraudShield, a solution recently launched by VIDA, the company introduces a multi-layered defense approach that combines biometric verification with multiple additional protection layers, ranging from real-time device analysis and behavioral monitoring to fraud risk detection.

Real protection must verify three things simultaneously, the person’s face, their identity, and the device being used. That is why VIDA continue building protection systems designed to prevent fraud across every possible vulnerability.
