An e-meterai is the digital version of a traditional paper stamp used for document authentication. Just like a physical stamp, an e-meterai guarantees the security and authenticity of a document. In fact, an e-meterai supported by a digital signature can prevent any form of document forgery.
However, there are four common mistakes when applying e-meterai and digital signatures that you should be aware of. Let’s explore them!
1. Using a Wet Signature After Applying E-Meterai
One of the most common mistakes is using a wet signature on a document that already has an e-meterai. While there is no strict prohibition against this, a wet signature does not provide sufficient security for the document.
If you want to give the document legal force with an e-meterai, you must use a digital signature. This is because a digital signature is tied to an official identity, such as a national ID (KTP). When a document is signed digitally, the signer's identity can be verified and traced electronically, ensuring that the document has not been altered after signing.

On the other hand, a wet signature is easy to forge and cannot be verified digitally. This means that the document is vulnerable to forgery or manipulation after it is signed.
So, if you use an e-meterai but still apply a wet signature, the security of the document is not maximized since a wet signature is easily forged and cannot be digitally verified.
In short, to ensure complete document security, using an e-meterai must always be followed by a digital signature, not a wet signature.
2. Converting E-Meterai into a QR Code
The second mistake is assuming that an e-meterai can be converted into a QR code. In fact, the e-meterai must remain in its original form when applied to a document to ensure the document's legal validity and protection.
You might often see digital documents with a QR code. In reality, the QR code is merely a tool to verify the presence of a digital signature. For instance, after the e-meterai and digital signature are applied, some platforms include a QR code to facilitate the verification process. But the QR code is not used to verify the authenticity of the e-meterai.
If you want to check the authenticity of an e-meterai, you can do so using the Peruri Scanner app.
3. Printing E-Meterai Yourself
Just because it's electronic, doesn't mean you can print e-meterai yourself. Another mistake is assuming that an e-meterai is a physical stamp that can be printed manually. An e-meterai can only be obtained from authorized sources. You cannot print a stamp and apply it to a digital document, calling it an e-meterai. VIDA provides e-meterai to help you manage documents securely and conveniently.
4. Ignoring the Validity of a Digital Signature
An e-meterai is always followed by a digital signature to authenticate the document. If the user fails to check or ignores the validity of the digital signature, there is a risk that the document may be deemed invalid even if it has an e-meterai. It’s crucial to always ensure that the document has a valid digital signature.
You can check the digital signature at https://tte.kominfo.go.id/verifyPDF. Simply upload the PDF document and wait for the verification process to complete. A notification will appear indicating whether the document contains a digital signature or not.
