Yogyakarta, October 26, 2023 – Artificial intelligence-powered cyberattacks are likely to be more dangerous, Communication and Information System Security Research Center (CISSReC) data showed. It indicates the significant risk of personal data being exploited by AI for purposes other than those intended by the owner. Thus, there is a need to implement Personal Data Protection (PDP) Law No. 27/2022 in an effort to reduce the risks of AI-based personal data misuse.
Communications and Information Ministry Director General for Information Applications Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, B.Sc., M.M, during the Indonesia Privacy and Security Summit 2023 said, “It is really interesting to go into the topic of personal data protection in the AI era. Every digital action produces personal data. It is necessary to implement the PDP Law since our data will be detected and exposed in every digital activity. The state exists to protect [personal data], so that the collected personal data can be used for its intended purpose and cannot be exploited in ways that exceed what the data subject and the data controller have agreed upon.”
As an electronic certification provider (PSrE) recognized by Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, VIDA offers firms digital transformation solutions for personal data protection based on the PDP Law. This includes data control and processing, data storage, governance documents, information security, data reviews, and access controls. VIDA also performs frequent external audits conducted by regulators and independent parties to ensure that its policies and procedures follow the standards for protecting personal data across its services.
“As a global standard-compliant digital identity technology provider, VIDA implements PDP through online identity verification, digital signatures, and authentication services. This use may be applied on a larger scale at reasonable prices and with a more user-friendly experience, minimizing the danger of identity theft and strengthening digital confidence in society,” said Adrian Anwar, Managing Director of VIDA.
Technological breakthroughs, particularly in AI, have had a tremendous impact on various aspects of life in the digital transformation era. According to an Ipsos poll, 78% of Indonesian respondents believe AI has more advantages than disadvantages. As a result, Indonesia is the most hopeful about the AI technology.
Behind its immense potential benefits, AI technology also poses privacy and personal data protection challenges. AI, such as deepfake, is capable of collecting information and photos from the Internet and using them to produce false identities of people and influence public opinion. Implementing compliance with the PDP Law can serve as a guideline to ease activities in the digital world, protecting personal data and user privacy rights in the middle of AI technology's rapid growth.
